Q. How do I get the students to "buy-in" into all of this?
A. Students have a very strong sense of justice. If you present the global competencies and the sustainable development goals in a problem based scenario format where they are allowed to create solutions or to have a voice as an advocate, they will become very invested. Give them control and they will quickly become global leaders, in and out, of the classroom.
Q. What kinds of topics should I be addressing?
A. Start local. This means look at situations around you that could present a connection to the sustainable development goals or global competencies. Examples: Are there food deserts in your community? Are there unaddressed environmental issues? Is there hunger? Poverty? Injustice? Use one of the things that students could discuss, plan and become advocates for change.
